FARM-Africa and SOS Sahel Ethiopia Started working in partnership in 2002 while operating the Participatory Forest Management Programme (PFMP) in the forests of Bonga, Borana, Chilimo (Ethiopia) and Nou (Tanzania). The programme worked from 2002 - 2007 and aimed to achieve environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation by supporting the development of innovative participatory forest management plans that secure the rights, revenues and responsibilities of forest users. The Bale Eco-Region Sustainable Management Programme (BERSMP) is the second joint programme of the two organisations. The programme has been operating in the Bale Massif since 2007 and brings local communities into a central role in sustainable natural resources management supported by government services, across the whole Bale Massif. The goal of the programme is to mutually enhance the unique biodiversity and vital ecological processes of the Bale Mountains Eco-region, and the social and economic well being of the communities dependent on the Eco-region’s natural resources.
