Partnering with Government and Community to Manage the Natural Resources of the Bale Massif

Policy

This output incorporates various activities in order to work with government partners and other actors to ensure the placement of improved / appropriate legal frameworks regarding natural resources. The major activities under this output are:

Lessons captured – best practice
In order to feed the programme’s progress and experience into the appropriate fora, and specifically to the relevant regional and national offices, the programme is producing publications.

Show and tell tours / study tours
A number of national and international study tours are being arranged for policy and decision makers for practical demonstration of on the ground activities.  Woreda to Woreda show and tell tours are found to be an efficient and effective way to scale up and share learning from one Woreda to another. Community to community teaching and training is also another innovative way to scale and spread learning. The programme is using opportunities to enable communities themselves to transfer and gain knowledge, experience and skills to and from one another.

Policy analysis - policy briefs produced

The policy context in Ethiopia is dynamic. Building on initial policy analysis carried out by former interventions, specifically focused around Bale, a full policy analysis is being carried out. The analysis will be periodically updated in order to record and keep up with policy changes. Linked to the analysis, policy briefs are being produced by the programme and circulated to a targeted audience.

Policy dialogue

The programme aims to form a strong policy learning and lobbying body working closely with the Regional Council of Oromia and its relevant offices, the Oromia Forest Enterprises Supervising agency as well as the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and other relevant government and non government organisations.

Media Outreach

The programme profile is very important. Working in relative rural remoteness the programme needs to find ways that ensure lessons, experience and awareness of the programme is widely shared. Therefore, the programme is working with different media groups to gain wide exposure. The programme will also produce video and CD information packs for wider circulation.
