PNRMU organized a training programme on
REDD
FARM Africa/SOS Sahel Ethiopia’s
Participatory
 Natural Resources
Management Unit (PNRMU) in collaboration
with the Nature Conservation and
Research Center (NCRC) of Ghana
conducted a four-day training aimed at
raising national level awareness on
Carbon financing with special focus on
Reduced Emission through Deforestation
and Degradation (REDD+).
“We intend to support the scale up of
REDD+ in Ethiopia by bringing
stakeholders together, transferring
knowledge and sharing local, national
and international experiences” said
Arsema Andargatchew, the Sustainable
Finance Advisory of PNRMU.
During an opening remark he gave H.E
Member of Parliament and OFWE’s Director
General, Dr. Girma Amente, reminded
participants that Oromia region has
started to make preliminary preparations
to access carbon finance through REDD+
implementation.
“Oromia Region has the required policy
framework, organizational structure and
a pilot project. Furthermore, OFWE has
assigned a Carbon focal person with the
intention to establish a Carbon Unit in
the near future. The Enterprise with the
involvement of the communities has
started to work on forest boundary
demarcation to facilitate assessment of
forest areas and carbon stocks.
Participants from other regions, I urge
you to share what you have learned here
with your respective regional
institutions and start paving the way to
initiate REDD projects” said the
Director General.
Tsegaye Tadesse, BERSMP’s Programme
Coordinator, stated that REDD+ is an
opportunity for Africa and its forest
conservation efforts and that it is
essential to establish a wider network
in order to help increase Africa’s
benefit from this funding mechanism. He
also confirmed that FARM-Africa and SOS
Sahel Ethiopia commit themselves to
mobilize efforts and provide similar
trainings in the future to enhance
knowledge transfer.
Got basic information
Participants from Amhara, Benishangule
Gumz, Oromia and SNNP regions have
attended the training from 21-24 June
2011. The Amhara region SSLFMP
participant Birhan Ali said he has
acquired basic information on REDD+.
“This is my first REDD+ training and it
has been an eye opener. The practical
exercises and the experiences from
different countries enlightened us on
the nature of REDD+ projects.”
Getu woldesemayat, a participant from
MoA said “the training will make a
difference in our REDD+ related works.
It was a springboard; from now on we
will dig more information regarding this
issue. We must share the information
with our colleagues and prepare
ourselves for national level emission
reduction initiatives.”
Perusing REDD through PFM
BERSMP is working to implement REDD+
through PFM approach on 500,000 ha of
forest in the Bale Mountains. The
project was started in 2007.
The programme has so far completed a
feasibility study, PIN and legal,
institutional and technical analyses. A
Letter of No Objection has also been
obtained from the EPA. It will start
working on establishing its carbon stock
baseline, develop PDD and design MRV
system in the near future.
