Strengthening Natural Resources and Forest Management system in Ethiopia

Survey revealed community earns less income from NTFP

The Strengthening Sustainable Livelihoods and Forest Management Programme (SSLFM) Participatory Natural Resources Management Baseline Survey revealed that community in the Programme implementation areas earn less income from Non Timber Forest Products (NTFPs).

The report described most of the people in and around the SSLFMP implementation forest sites
generate less income from non NTFPs. The SSLFMP programme coordinator Benedict Irwin said these people are less aware of the market value of their products.

“Each Regional Advisory Support Unit team has recognized that these NTF products are isolated from the national and international market. Realizing this, each Programme team has planned to change the situation through production and product quality enhancement and linking the existing NTFP business to national and international market” says Benedict Irwin.

To increase the income shares of NTFP at the household level, the Programme is building community capacity in Market Analysis and Development (MA and D) approach”. This approach encourages community groups develop plan and set target on year by year basis based on their respective local situation.

The Survey
Participatory Natural Resources Management Baseline Survey
is conducted to serve as a point of reference against which the Programme’s progress indicators can be tracked and monitored.

The Survey is structured based on three program focus areas: Participatory Forest Management (PFM), improved livelihoods and policy support.

The livelihoods component of the SSLFMP aims at increasing the percentage of the income share of NTFP in household income. The Survey report revealed that the SNNPR and Oromia regions earn better income from NTFP than the Amhara and Benishangul Gumz regions.
