Strengthening Sustainable Livelihoods and Forest Management
(SSLFM) Programme in Ethiopia is an action that aims at securing
the sustainable management of Ethiopia’s forests,
reducing environmental degradation and safeguarding user
rights for more than 200,000 people.
The project will be implemented from
2009-2014 in four regions of Ethiopia: Amhara,
Benishangule-Gumz, Oromia and Southern Nations
Nationalities and Peoples Regions. It covers 270,000 ha
of forest areas. More than 200,000 people will directly
benefit form the programme of which 50% of theme are
women. The indirect beneficiaries of SSLFM are estimated
to be around three million.
One Participatory Natural Resources
Management Unit in Addis Ababa and four mobile Regional
Advisory Support Units (RASUs) are assisting the
implementation of the programme. Agriculture and Rural
Development Bureaus of each PFM implementing regions
except the Oromia region will host the RASUs. The Oromia
Forest and Wildlife Enterprise branch office hosts the
regional RASU.
Programme vision
To see government authorities in the four
target regions incorporating PFM in their annual plans,
budgets, job descriptions and management structures and
practically engaging with communities to implement and
monitor PFM plans
Specific objectives

To further contribute to the long-term conservation
and improvement of forest condition in Ethiopia
through adoption, expansion and implementation of PFM in four regions
-
to increase the contribution to poverty reduction
and improvement of livelihoods in forest dependent
communities through identification and development
of viable non-timber forest production (NTFP)
enterprises

To ensure the adoption of PFM by federal and
regional forest policy, regulations and practices so
sustainably managing forest resources and protecting
the user rights of local communities including
indigenous populations
