Borana
Collaborative Forest Management Project
The Borana Forests are found in the present Guji and Borana Zones of Oromia Regional State. The specific forest sites of the project are two Regional Forest Priority Areas, Negelle-Dawa and
Yabello-Arero. These forests are within the
Somalia-Masai Regional Centre of Endemism. The forests are located in the southern part of the country occupying patches in
Yabello, Negelle and Arero areas. SOS Sahel has been working in the area since 1999 promoting sustainable management of forest resource using participatory forest management systems.
The Borana Collaborative Forest Management Project (BCFMP) is a component of the joint Participatory Forest Management Programme (PFMP) of FARM-Africa and SOS Sahel Ethiopia.
The project aims to establish community based natural resource management systems, working with traditional institutions (Oromo Gada systems and structures) at the appropriate level. These institutions are already skilled in local level natural resource management.
The key partners of this project are the Oromiya Rural Land and Natural Resources Administration, at Regional, Zonal and Woreda levels and local Communities.
